"A VIEW OF FACTORIES" BY ANNIE LOVERING PEROT (PHILADELPHIA, B. 1854)
Executed in oil on canvas; signed lower left "A.L. Perot"
Item # 010HZP22U
A rich and vibrant scene by Philadelphia native Annie Perot, the present work is a cheerful view capturing the juxtaposition of nature and the harshest aspects of the city. Smoke pours from the factory smoke stacks in the distance while the colorful houses in the forefront are reminiscent of a Bermuda paradise. In the forefront nearly two-thirds of the painting is dedicated to a chaotic natural landscape that is overtaking the homes and buildings in real-time. The brush work is intense and dramatic with heavy impasto strokes and a strong preference for vertical lines against a wonderfully textured canvas.
Annie Lovering Perot was born in Philadelphia on October 20th of 1854 and spent her career promoting art in her beloved city. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy under such titans as William Merritt Chase, Hugh Breckenridge and Thomas Anshutz as well as Fred Wagner. Her exhibits include Pennsylvania Academy from 1913-1926, the Art Insitute of Chicago in 1912, the Plastic Club 1913-1916 and the Society of Independent Artists in 1917 and 1918.
