PATINATED BRONZE VASIFORM LAMP WITH GOAT HEADS OVER TRIFORM GOAT FEET
Converted to electricity in the first half of the 20th century | cast circa 1880 | unmarked
Item # 312WNP11P
A beautifully cast bronze lamp from the Napoleon III period, it features an elegant central column with a vasiform silhouette with intricate Greek-key engraving along the top, this with laboriously hand-stippled texture to the background of the verticals on each key. It is supported by three gracefully curved legs, each terminating in exquisitely detailed and chiseled goat sabots.
This tripod form not only provides perfect stability without the need of balancing, but also creates a sense of transparency in the form with the urn rising almost weightless to raise the bulk of the lamp. Over each leg is a series of motifs typical of the Napoleon III era, some of which carried forward into the Aesthetic movement, surmounted at the apex by incredibly well-defined Ram's Head masks. The texture and articulation of detail in these masks is above reproach and noteworthy.
The body of the lamp is beautifully patinated, probably utilizing chemicals for an underlying layer while using tinted lacquers for the upper layers, the result being a rather deep and beautifully translucent surface.
At the apex, the lamp is equipped with a dual socket featuring pull chains, all from its conversion to electricity during the 20th century (and rewiring during the late 20th century) - note the very careful attention to detail in the hardware, all of which has been carefully selected and fabricated to be in keeping with the aesthetic and form of the lamp. An unusually well-done conversion that compliments every facet of the urn. The result is a positively exquisite lighting piece.
Measurements: 27 3/8" H x 6 1/2" D x 7" W
