Italy, 19th century
"Bust of Apollo Belvedere after Antiquity"
Carved marble | Italian, circa late 19th century, unsigned | carved "APOLLO" on plinth
Item # 406PNS24E
A beautifully executed bust of Apollo Belvedere after Antiquity from the Grand Tour era, this example features a profile of the son of Zeus and Leto, a complex character represented as the god of dancing and music, the healer, the truth teller and prophet, the Sun and of poetry. Here he is captured with a flowing paludamentum cloak fastened by a floral rosette fibula while looking over his proper left shoulder at something in the infinite distance. The plinth is noted APOLLO in script along the edge beneath his breast and the figure is raised on a cove-molded socle. A very classical image. Unsigned, carved from a solid block of marble in Italy during the late 19th century.
Measurements: 20 1/4" H x 13 1/2" W x 7" D
Condition Report:
Gouge to his proper left cheek and a few spots to his hair. Discoloration to the stone throughout with some staining and scuffing, particularly to the reverse. Minor chips and nicks. Wonderful aged patina. A fine presentation.
