FREDERICK WILLIAM HULME (ENGLISH, 1816-1884) OIL PAINTING OF COUNTRY LANDSCAPE
Signed lower left "F. W. Hulme", label verso notes the scene as depicting the road to Chalfont St. Peters, Buckinghamshire
Item # 604KJT12Z
An exceptional and large depiction of an English countryside landscape, the brilliant use of color and light bringing this impressive scene to the forefront of your attention in any setting. The careful detailing of every element, character and animal in this complex scene is notable and a clear testament to Hulme’s ability to capture a quiet scene in a powerful way. His works are held at museums in Leicester (Sussex Landscape), Liverpool (Rivington Valley) and Montreal (Surrey Forest), with very consistently impressive results over the last century at Sotheby’s and Christies. The present example retains two early labels from Christies noting it’s offering as lot 118 in sale 6897 and an inventory label, as well as an old gallery label describing the artist, a brief biography on his accomplishments as a tonal painter and a note of the scene’s placement on the road to Chalfont St. Peters, Buckinghamshire (“Chalfont Street Peters - Bucks”).
