"VENUS DE MILO"
After the Antique
Carrara marble | Italy, circa late 19th to early 20th century
Item # 106HYG17P
This large antique sculpture of Venus de Milo, or Aphrodite de Milos to the Romans, is a substantial 3/4 scale statue measuring in at 44" in overall height. It is a good example carved from a single block of Carrara marble around the turn of the century; the stone itself is superior, the marble just slightly translucent with a silky and soapy surface textured with gentle gray veins, this being beautifully carved with a good sense of fidelity to the original.
A famous model and a favorite copyist work during the Grand Tour period, the original statue was sculpted between 150 and 125 BC in Parian marble and is believed to have been sculpted by Alexandros of Antioch. Found in Milos, Greece in 1820, it is held in the permanent collection of the Louvre and remains one of the most iconic of ancient Greek sculptures.
Measurements: 44" H x 12" W x 11" D (base)
Condition Report:
Aged stone with gentle discoloration throughout, the base with some more notable staining as well as roughness/chipping. Roughness/chip to her prone knee and several chips in the folds of her garment; other minor spots of flaw/blemish/chipping. A very good presentation.
