ENGLISH CARVED BURL-WALNUT PEDESTAL DESK
In the Georgian taste, circa 1900
Item # 306IXP14Z
A robust and beautifully executed pedestal desk in the Georgian taste, it is a product of the turn of the century and features careful hand-craftsmanship of every aspect of the piece. Built in three parts for easy transport, the top features a replaced gilt-tooled cognac leather top surrounded by a relief-carved border of well-developed repeating patterns featuring various forms of foliage.
The top edge projects over all sides with a serpentine form that conforms to the curvature of the body. Designed to have more than adequate storage, it features carefully hand-cut dovetails with precise pins and tight joinery throughout. Both sides of the top have a single broad drawer flanked on either side by two smaller drawers, these situated over a series of graduated drawers on one side of the desk and a pair of cabinet doors on the other side of the desk. The desk rests over ogival feet that are carved to match the flowing form of the moldings above.
Every aspect of the desk was designed with care, executed with a careful hand and beautifully finished. The result is a form that has become more beautiful with age, the chaotic changing of colors in the burl walnut veneers from rubbing, the oils of skin, the sunlight cascading across surfaces all working together to create a compelling surface. It is a piece that was designed to be used actively and remains no less functional and enjoyable today.
