ENGLISH PAINTED AND PATINATED ELM WINDSOR ARM CHAIR
Circa first half of the 19th century | replaced back leg
Item # 209GTW28P
We love the surface on this chair! Nearly black from years of oxidization, the combination of pigments and stains create a chaotic and rather wonderful overall surface. It has worn away in the areas most heavily trafficked, leaving the rich warm hue of the underlying elm woods to glow under years of natural rubbing and burnishing and the application of waxes over the decades. It features a gently bowed crest rail with uncarved ears on either side over a central vasiform splat with two full length spindles on either side, these flanked proper stiles that solidify the chair back. A steam-bent arm rail wraps around the back raised by shaped arm supports before four short spindles on either side. The scooped seat is comfortable with its deep swell and excellent contouring. This is raised over beautifully turned front legs, the back legs with a more simple taper terminating in pointed toes; all legs are stretched with a simple H-stretcher.
Gorgeous and fully functional, this is a chair that is made to be used and enjoyed while also providing some much needed surface history and texture to whatever room it becomes a part of.
Measurements: 39 3/4" H x 19 1/2" D x 25 1/4" W; 16 3/8" H to the seat
Condition Report:
Old and almost certainly original painted surface, heavily worn, burnished and oxidized; back right leg is replaced and the angle is slightly off from the splay of the other legs; old metal strapping on the underside healing some cracks; old shrinkage crack in the elm seat, remaining stable and without concern; the chair is sturdy, strong and ready to continue serving for many years to come - not just decorative, but fully enjoyable.
