About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

GEORGE III STYLE FIVE-PIECE STERLING SILVER COFFEE AND TEA SERVICE SET
By Whiting Manufacturing Co., New York; each with Whiting hallmark (two-headed chimera w/ encircled W), "3358 / 3 GILLS / PAT. 1892 / 925/1000 FINE"
Item # 104VAD21S

An exquisite five-piece tea and coffee service executed entirely in .925 sterling silver by Whiting Manufacturing of New York. Renowned for their quality, the present set is no exception: note the exquisite chasing and chiseling of the cast elements. Each handle and leg shows elaborate development of the Georgian motif with brilliant scrolling acanthus complete with minute hammered texturing. The set has never been monogrammed and presents beautifully with a high-polish surface. As always, we have cleaned the surfaces entirely through hand-polishing and without any machine buffing, preserving the overall soft surface patina throughout.

[coffee pot] tiny dents and divots to body visible under raking light (with handle on left, the polished spherical body above the legs) and evidence of some dent removal; to the right of the handle a tiny dent over four tiny abrasions; other tiny scuffs and abrasions to the body;[tea pot] lid appears to have been pressed at some point (note the difference in form between the coffee pot lid and the teapot lid), very slight "give" in the insulator at the bottom of the pot, minor abrasions to the spherical body including "speck" dents, light surface scuffs; [sugar] good condition, specks of abrasion; [waste pot] good condition, no noted flaws; [creamer] one minute surface dimple, minor specks of abrasion, significant smoothing of the detail around the rim from handling over the years. Handles of the coffee and tea pots both have ever-so-slight wiggle in the joint. Overall the set remains a fine presentation, free of any monogram or surface alteration.
