About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

FINE GEORGE III MAHOGANY DOCUMENT BOX
England, circa early 19th century
Item # C104021

A very attractive and useful document box from the first quarter of the 19th century, this tidy and austere design is a product of the George III era. Dressed in dense and beautifully grained solid mahogany planks around all four sides, a simple cove-molded step-down edge frames the top. This raises over original cut brass hinges with apparently original cut steel screws to give access to the interior of the box. The old fabric lining has deteriorated but is likely original and still serviceable - we would never recommend changing it. On either side of the box are original lifting rings with rosette backplates.

Measurements: 11 5/8" H x 10 1/8" W x 10 1/8" D

Condition Report:
Old refinish. Minor nicks and abrasions to surface, these having nicely joined the patina under old waxes. Retains early key. Tarnish to mounts. Tiny spliced patch beside the lock. Torn and deteriorating velour to interior of box, this likely original.
