A BACHANALIA GILT-BRONZE BASIFORM TABLE LAMP
Circa third quarter of the 19th century | in the manner of Claude Michel known as Clodion
stock ref. 407SQJ10P
A nice decorative lamp from the late 19th century, it features a fabulous bas-relief and sculpted gilt-bronze body after the known designs of Clodion. These represent a rich scene of Bachanalia with putto playing tug-of-war while crowned with grape leaves. Several carry a thrysus in emphasis of the Dionysian connection while several putto are fauns. On either side a horned creature projects boldly. This is raised over a polished marble base raised on little bronze toupie feet.
Measurements: 31" H x 6" diameter
Condition Report:
Converted from an oil lamp at some point in the 20th century - upper elements are gilded metal and brass. Rewired with a high quality thick braided cord and tested in-house. Probably regilded at some point with trace oxidization, tarnish and rubbing wear throughout; rubbing through the gilding of the upper ring behind the horns. Minor chipping/wear to marble. No shade. A fine presentation.
