GRAND TOUR BRONZE BUST OF ACHILLES
Circa 19th century, unsigned; titled to edge of base
Item # 907PBL17A
A crisply cast bust of Achilles, the hero of the Trojan War in Homer's Iliad is a proud and dignified figure. As a product of the Grand Tour, it was cast at the height of European interest in objects and works of antiquity. The quality is self-evident in the intricate surface detail that is brought to life in the winged helmet, scaled breastplate and curling garment draped around his shoulders. It retains an original surface patina with dark bronze, hints of black, traces of verde and rubbed bronze highlights from handling in the relief. The base is titled in script "Achille".
It is a fine selection for anyone passionate about classical representations of antiquity, a work that makes statement about the setting it is placed: a statement of heroism, cunning and excellence in all things.
