About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

ITALIAN ROCAILLE-CARVED SILVER-GILT WALL MIRROR IN THE ROCOCO TASTE
Probably Northern Italian circa 1870
Item # 403NDK18A

An incredibly playful and expressive Italian wall mirror, it is bold full of vigor while being light and elegant at the same time. The dramatic flair of the almost extreme projection of the crest and the excessive curves of the scrolling elements along the sides and bottom are subdued by the sheer delicacy of the carving work. A thinness and airiness pervade the frame through the careful thought given to the design; in execution, the craftsman pierced the frame and carved each scrolled element to be thin with relieved edges to create as much negative space as is practical. The result allows the scale of the mirror to appear smaller than it actually is so that we see incredible presence, texture and drama without being overwhelmed.

Note the very fine execution of the rocaille carvings throughout. The reverse is largely untouched with all boards, nails and glue blocks remaining in place. The glass is quite early and shows the effects of age on the silvering without becoming distracting.

A very fine acquisition - stylish and very at home even in the modern interior.

Measurements: 62 5/8" H x 39 1/2" W

Condition Report:
Silver-gilt refreshed throughout and both faux and intentional wear for a chaotic distressed surface; hairline cracks to carvings throughout; backboards appear to be untouched; hardware is modern (probably mid-20th century); original pane of glass with silvering loss and scuffs; ready-to-place.
