H.R. DE VAINS
French, 1848 - 1886
Jockey on a Race Horse
Patinated bronze | signed in base "HR de VAINS" | original foundry label to the underside for Auguste Gouge
Item # 306CPA15Q
A very good cast of a race horse and jockey in full gallop while riding along the course fencing, this is one of the few models produced by the sculptor H.R. de Vains and is rare in its retention of the original foundry label on the underside noting its birth in the foundry of Auguste Gouge. The piece exhibits beautiful surface texture and a fine grade of chiseling throughout that is brought to life with the overall medium-brown surface patina. The ground truly looks like a heavily trod race track with deep hoof marks pressed into the soft soil. A delightful model that has great presence at nearly 20" in overall length.
Measurements: 19 7/8" W x 13 1/4" H x 5 3/8" D
Condition Report:
Very fine original condition. Light rubbing to raised elements from handling; some rubbing along the neck of the horse where the reigns have likely shifted over time. Slight wiggle between the post and the horse - it acts as a pivot point and remains relatively snug - naturally a subject like this should only be picked up by the base, as the only point of contact for the horse and rider with the base is at the fence post. Cleaned, sealed in conservator's grade wax, polished and a very fine presentation.
