JOHN HORACE HOOPER (BRITISH, 1852-1906) FINE ANTIQUE LANDSCAPE PAINTING
"Saxmunden, Essex", signed lower left "J Horace Hooper"
Item # 130112CBP15
A very magnetic work, this vivid landscape by John Horace Hooper captures a warm late spring afternoon in Saxmunden, Essex. Grazing in the overgrown pasture are a flock of sheep, most enjoying the bright sun while a few rest in the shade of an old tree. The slow trickle of the quiet pond is depicted with a broad palette of color, the sky reflecting along the middle of the water while the greens of the overgrown bank dance along the edges of this sleepy body of water. The work remains in exceptional condition, as we have just had it professionally conserved. It is signed lower left in the distinctive italic scrawl reading "J Horace Hooper". This is an investment grade work of art for serious collectors of the period.
John Horace Hooper was born in England in 1852. An active painter with a highly distinctive style about his landscapes and seascapes, Hooper made his debut in London at the Suffolk Street Gallery, where he exhibited from 1877-78. He exhibited six times at The Royal Academy, exhibited at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, The Royal Hibernian Academy and The Arthur Tooth & Sons Gallery. John Horace Hooper was active until 1899 and died in 1906.
