FRENCH LOUIS XVI STYLE TRANSITIONAL TWO-TIER MARQUETRY TABLE
Late 19th century
Item # 406NPZ26P
A very attractive two-tier table in the transitional Louis XVI taste, it features a marquetry inlay on both the shelf and the top surrounded by a pierced brass gallery over an apron mounted with complex ormolu bronze floral displays. A single drawer is situated in the apron that can only be accessed by depressing a tiny button beneath the underside, this button allowing the drawer to spring forward with some fairly strong action. The drawer is beautifully dovetailed in the joints. Each leg is fluted with floral and ribbon mounts over each, the flutes embellished with ormolu garlands and the cabriole legs terminating in animal paw sabots.
It remains a beautifully designed, great to look at and incredibly useful table for any number of design scenarios. And of course the springing drawer is very fun.
Measurements: 31 1/8" H x 11 3/4" D x 20" W
Condition Report:
Beautifully aged and patinated surface - staining and wear throughout the marquetry that has not been refinished and has simply joined the surface; this could be refinished upon request, but presents with a very nice aged appeal; button to the underside re-fabricated (original button had fallen off) in brass; mounts present in good condition with some verdigris and oxidization and rubbing through the original gilding in many areas, overall being bright and well-maintained; table has a slight backward cant to it and subtle wiggle in the joints, overall remaining strong and ready for regular active use in the home. Waxed and polished, a lovely presentation.
