GRAND TOUR
Italian, 19th Century
Standing Figure of Mercury
Patinated bronze | Unsigned | situated over original black marble base
Item # 212SNQ09L
A very nice decorative bronze from the last half of the 19th century, a product of the Grand Tour and likely cast in Italy, it features the standing figure of Mercury as he raises his hand toward the sun and clasps the Caduceus in his left hand. Unlike the generally negative symbolism of snakes, the two snakes of the Caduceus were a symbol of the herald or the speedy passage of an important messenger, fitting for Mercury, messenger of the gods. It is situated over the original black marble base and makes a very pleasant presentation.
Measurements: 14 3/4" H [bronze only, 15 3/4 including marble base]; base diameter 5 3/4"
Condition Report:
Light wear and discoloration to the patina, overall remaining a very nice presentation. Trace discoloration to the original patina, perhaps intentional with an overall even vedigris hue to the garment and rocky feature behind him. Old surface accretion to the crevices, including his hand holding the standard. Faint seam line visible in the upraised arm. Situated over original black marble base.
