"REBECCA AT THE WELL" MARBLE BUST BY ANTONIO PIAZZA (ITALIAN, 1875-1925)
Titled to base "Rebecca au Puits", signed verso "A. Piazza, Carrara"
Item # 908HWG11P
A talented sculptor of both the Neoclassical and also the Art Nouveau styles, the work of Antonio Piazza is almost without exception moving, whimsical and intriguing in his presentation of the human form. His work is held in the Musée de Montpelier in France.
The present sculpture is striking for its similarities with the works of Emmanuel Villanis, first in the vestal portrayal of the young girl but also in the playful relief scripting of the socle. These "modern" touches are striking in such a deeply historical representation. The bust depicts the Biblical story of Rebecca resting against her water carrying vessel as her confident eyes are distant, lost in daydreaming. The tasteful and unusual portrayal of Rebecca is quite moving, a piece that highlights youth, beauty and strength in this important figure.
Executed in a lovely and pure white Carrara marble, it is signed to the reverse in his typical tidy script "A. Piazza, Carrara". This is a fine statement piece that tells a story about the home, about philosophy and character, about beauty and youth, about the modern juxtaposed against the historical.
