A PAIR OF ART NOUVEAU BRONZE VASES DEPICTING A SATYR AND MAENAD
Cast by Roman Bronze Works of New York | circa early 20th century
Item # 411SXU18A
A fabulous pair of vases with naturalistic and chaotic surface texture throughout the trapezoidal bodies around the bold and playful portrait busts of a Satyr in one and a Maenad in the other. They oppose eachother brilliantly, his face coy and playful with a sleepy eye winking at the Maenad. They are finished in a complex chemical patination that is highly variated in the right lighting - overall very dark brown with hints of ochre, verdigris, light brown and black. Both are sealed on the underside with the Roman Bronze Works foundry cachet and "#3" while one also has a "2" captured directly from the underlying mold in the underside. An unusual and most dramatic pair.
