Savry, Hendrik
Born in 1823, just west of Amsterdam in Haarlem, Holland, Hendrick Martinus Frederik George Savry was the son and student of the still-life painter Marinus Savrij. He continued the artistic tradition in his family, which included his sister, Cornelia Johanna, who was also a painter, and later his son, Henri M. Savrij (Dutch, 1871/72-1942), who likewise became a well-regarded painter of landscapes with cattle.
Hendrik Savry (also known as Savrij) was particularly well-known for his paintings of Dutch pasture landscapes, a style reminiscent of 17th-century painters like Albert Cuyp and Paulus Potter. His contemporaries included the Hague painters Pieter Stortenbeker and Jan de Haas.
His specialty was his pastoral depictions of cattle and farmers working the brightly lit meadows, often with streams working their way through the nostalgic scenes. These were very popular with collectors of his time and he led a very productive career through his death in Haarlem in 1907.
Today his work is held in the permanent museum collections of The Art Galleries of Montreal [Landscape with Livestock] and The Gemeentemus in The Hague [Cattle in a Meadow] among others.
