ISIDORE JULES BONHEUR [after]
French, 1827-1901
Striding Bull
Patinated bronze | signed in naturalistic base "I. BONHEUR" | cast posthumously circa 1930-40
Item # 406THY02D
A handsome cast of Isidore Jules Bonheur's "Striding Bull", the present example is one of the many variations he produced in the same vein as the pair of Striding Bull monumental sculptures he modeled in 1878 to flank the entrance to Parc Georges Brassens in Paris. This variation features the bull standing perfectly still, unlike the other models that are astride and evoke gentle motion. His eyes are wary and stance has slightly tensed, suggesting he has set his eyes on something curious or out of place in the infinite distance.
The present example is cast posthumously circa 1930-1940, capturing a degree of silky texture from the underlying mold though not the totality that we would demand from a lifetime cast. It is an admirable example of posthumous work after the first World War and is finished in a nuanced medium-brown autumnal patina with hints of verde in the underlying colors. It is signed to the naturalistic base in the typical manner "I. BONHEUR".
A lovely decorative example.
