A beautifully detailed and glowing scene painted during the mid-19th century after the original painting by Gabriel Metsu (Dutch, 1629-1667), the scene captures in near photographic realism a young woman selling onions and poultry while an older gentleman rests with his pipe in mouth; she bargains with her customer, an old woman with a bucket on her arm collecting goods from the market. The painting is executed in oil on canvas and is housed in an old giltwood frame.

Condition Report:
Relined. Professionally conserved, cleaned and fresh varnish applied. Under UV showing inpainting above the girl selling onions, to the onions in her hand; floral and vine decoration in the foreground (bottom edge) perhaps added or inpainted. Light craquelure throughout, canvas remains sturdy and stable. Housed in an old giltwood frame with wear, chipping, paint loss, cracking, etc.
