TRIPODAL GILT-AND-PATINATED METAL GUERIDON WITH BAS-RELIEF ALLEGORICAL MOTIF THROUGHOUT THE TOP
Designed by Jules-Paul Brateau (French, 1844-1923) and retailed by Tiffany & Co. of New York | Circa 1880
stock ref. 411KEA19A
A fine tripodal ewer table from the last quarter of the 19th century, this fabulous gueridon features a bas-relief decorated gilt bronze top with brilliantly detailed allegorical scenes throughout raised over tripod legs with anthemion mounts in the upper and a triangulated support raising a polished bronze vasiform urn over outward splayed human feet raised on angular pads integral with the stretcher.
The top is an example of extraorindary articulation with even the most minute elements of the storytelling brilliantly hammered, chiseled and chased into the surface. The table is designed by Jules-Paul Brateau and was retailed for him by Tiffany & Co. of New York, the underside signed in script noting their association.
The table would have been designed originally to hold a fitted ewer to rest in the recessed waves surrounding Venus as a central motif. Today, the top would most likely be best enjoyed when fitted with a glass top to protect the bas-relief while giving an attractive transparent surface to use functionally. This is of course something our shop can arrange upon request.
