UNUSUAL VICTORIAN MAHOGANY DOUBLE-SIDED BOOKCASE
England, circa mid-to-late 19th century
Item # 209APB28Q
This uncommon double-sided bookcase is composed of a complex array of latticework that lends the needed strength and angular support to the five shelves while still allowing for a wonderful thin profile and overall transparency of design. The way it was built allows the bookcase to present equally well from either side and to be used functionally from both sides at the same time, making it an ideal room divider or means of breaking up the space while preserving functionality. It is crafted of solid mahogany with a series of ring-turned and tapered balusters raising each of the fixed shelves. The structure rests over original brass castors.
Measurements: 54 1/8" H x 16" D x 42" W
Condition Report:
Old finish with scuffing and wear while retaining a nice overall patina; chips, grain-shrinkage cracks and losses here and there throughout; original castors; one "x" brace is missing from one shelf compartment; good sturdy overall structure. Bookcase presents beautifully.
