BRILLIANTLY FIGURED MAHOGANY TILT-TOP BREAKFAST TABLE ON ANIMAL PAWS
England, William IV period | circa 1840
Item # 309KMB22P
An incredibly lively table from the William IV period, this remarkable breakfast table is both a strikepoint and an entirely functional and enjoyable table for regular use in the home. The William IV designs are always eye-catching for their bold motifs and the larger-than-life approach to details - this piece is no exception, with a perfect balance between beauty through surface decoration and the natural brilliance of the wood.
This breakfast table form is particularly fun because it is designed to be easily tilted up to allow the room to open up when company is visiting. The original brass hardware under the table top allows the top to be released from the pedestal to fully rotate, which allows you to fully view the literally breathtaking book-matched crotch-cut mahogany veneers in the top. The pair of chaotic flame-like grain patterns rise vertically along the length of the table top, framed in a loosely cross-banded border with a some needed texture from the solid mahogany spooled border.
The central column is ring turned with oversized reeding along the length and a swirling gadrooning along the base, this with four points raised over elaborately carved animal paws raised on original castors.
Measurements: 28 3/8" H (floor to surface of table) x 44 5/8" D x 61 7/8" W
